B&O BRIDGE EXHIBIT

The 1927 Centenary Bridges are on loan to the Tourism Commission and Town of Rowlesburg from the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore.

The collection was created by B&O craftsmen to illustrate the great engineering prowess of the B&O.  The bridges were on display in Baltimore for Centenary exhibit, also called the "Fair of the Iron Horse."

The whole collection has not been on exhibit in one place since 1927 and has never been outside of the B&O Railroad Museum. Many of these bridges pioneered engineering techniques for bridge construction in America. The Fink truss greatly simplified the use of materials and lighter weight construction.  Fink's iron truss bridge across Tray Run is on the list of World Heritage Bridges.

The exhibit will be on display in the Szilagyi Center for the next five years. The Rowlesburg exhibit includes a model of the Cheat River Bridge, which when last seen had been swept down river 500 yards in the flood of 1985. Also included in the exhibit is a replica of the bridge General W.E. Jones, and his Confederate Raiders were sent to attack in Rowlesburg in 1863.  He was unsuccessful at Rowlesburg but destroyed a similar bridge in his raid on Fairmont.

The models range in size from 4 to 17 feet. This is a rare oppurtunity to see these marvelous antique models. The bridge exhibit is open on weekends from May to October and during all festival occasions.

The caboose was donated to RAHS by Harlan Castle of Cool Springs and transported to its site at the depot by Timothy Weaver. With help from volunteers and out of pocket expense Tim also gave the caboose new windows and fresh paint to make it a spectacular addition to the depot and to the town of Rowlesburg.

TRAY RUN VIADUCT

You can see this viaduct from two locations:

The first place is right below it on the road. From Rowlesburg take Rt. 72 north for about 1 mile.

A white sign is enscribed with the history of the viaduct and also lets you know you're approaching it, so look on your left for the valley it crosses. Watch closely or you'll drive right past it - the viaduct is above you and there's no good place to pulloff right in front of it. The road doesn't offer the greatest position for photographs or watching trains but its an interesting historical and scenic highlight.

For a better view, head back to Rowlesburg and cross the Cheat River and the Kingwood sub track on County Road 51. After crossing the Kingwood sub, take a left onto County Road 80, the Manheim Road and proceed about 1 mile until you reach the small town of Manheim. From Manheim, you can see the viaduct across the river on the opposite shore.

Because of the growth of trees, the best time for photographs is when the leaves are off the trees. You'll need a high powered lense, I'd say greater than a 150* to get a good closeup although lesser powered lenses can accomplish a wider shot. Best time with light on the viaduct is in the morning with the sun to the east, behind you.

A model of the viaduct in HO scale (1:87) is on display at the Train Depot (see higher for info).

Joseph H. Diss Debar, an artist from Doddridge County, was chosen by a committee of the Legislature to prepare drawings for an official seal for the State of West Virginia. The artist submitted his drawings with an explanation of each detail and from these was adopted, by the Legislature, a seal which has remained without change, the Official Seal of West Virginia.
The reverse side of the seal shows laurel and oak leaves, log house, hills, Tray Run viaduct, factories and boats. It is the Governor’s Official Seal
