2011 PRESS RELEASE
ROWLESBURG PLANNING ITS HUGE ANNUAL MODEL TRAIN
SHOW
The Rowlesburg Model Train Show has a new name:
The Northern WV Model Train Show! The Tourism Commission announces that the Mon
Valley Railroad Historical Society of WV will be a new partner and co-sponsor
of the train show. This is by far the biggest model train display in Northern West
Virginia! The show this year runs all three days of Labor Day Weekend, starting
September 3rd!
There is enough at this show to satisfy every fan
of model trains, young and old: Huge layouts, thousands of model train pieces, dozens
of working trains from antiques to modern locomotives all running at once, kids
time and free ice cream! That’s right, free ice cream! For the first 50 kids each
day, 12 and under, an ice cream bar or push-up creamsicle will be given away
free. During Kid’s Hour each day at 2:00 pm the model train clubs allow kids to
“run the railroad.” To top things off Mark Phillips of Frederick, MD is
bringing his newly acquired road caboose to take the “big” and little kids for
rides around town!
Awaiting visitors at this year’s show will be two
buildings chuck full of trains, trains, trains and more trains--from vintage
pre-war tin layouts to detailed replicas of the local working railroads.
Nationally recognized author, Fran Cannon
Slayton, is returning as the kick-off speaker. She will be back to talk about
writing the book that put Rowlesburg into the hearts and minds of thousands of
young readers-- “When the Whistle Blows." She is planning to read from her
wonderful book and sign copies. The book was written specifically for juvenile
readers, but read by just as many adults. It has been praised highly from coast
to coast and is now out in affordable paperback. Books will be available for
purchase. Slayton’s presentation and book signing will be held in the Ambulance
Building at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 3rd.
Enjoy spending time with the largest model
railroad bridge collection in the United States, now on loan from the Baltimore
and Ohio Museum! The 10 bridges originally were created for the
1927 Centenary in Baltimore to celebrate the B&O’s 100th
Anniversary. These beautiful works of art have not been seen together as a
collection since 1927. The display is housed at the Szilagyi Center in
Rowlesburg and is open all three days.
This show is for kids, adults, casual model
train fans, serious hobbyists and the public at large. Hobbyists can buy, sell
and trade. Vendors’ tables will be set up inside and out at the Ambulance
Building, depending on weather. We invite serious hobbyists to bring static
displays and photos to be included this year in our Show. Also on display at
the Ambulance Building will be a collection of locomotives made by famous model
maker, Mel Thornburg, especially for the B&O Railroad to display in depots
and department stores at Christmas.
There will be something for everyone! Lots of
food, live entertainment, tours of Cannon Hill and the Civil War battle sites
in and around Rowlesburg.
For railroad fans and photographers there is much to do, see and
photograph in the Rowlesburg area, including Tray Run Viaduct, the M&K
shops, the Kingwood Tunnel, stone arch bridge over Salt Lick Creek, the Irish
Railroad Workers Cemetery, the 180-degree Graveyard Curve, the old B&O's
version of Horseshoe Curve, and helpers still working the mountain grades.
Then, there is Cannon Hill from which to take pictures of the entire town and
railroad 600 feet below. This is a major WV Civil War Battle site. Rides
available all three days from the Rowlesburg Depot Museum (next to the
caboose).
